We have a Sunday School in Weobley at the Parish
Church on the 2nd 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month. The 1st
Sunday is a family service designed to be suitable for children
staying in church and on any 5th Sunday we have a joint service
with the other six churches in our group, moving round them
so that we all get a chance to enjoy each of the churches.
The children who come to Sunday School start in the congregation
with everyone else and then after the opening hymn they go
back to the Tower Room with a teacher and at least one adult
assistant. The teaching is Bible based and the children follow
up the lesson and discussion by drawing or modelling or some
such activity. Children of any age are welcome and the teacher
will adapt the lesson to suit them. If a parent wants to come
in with a child that's just fine. The children and adults
rejoin the congregation in time to go up to the altar to receive
Communion or a blessing. After the service we chat over a
drink and a biscuit.
This term we are following the theme used in many services
of Nine Lessons and Carols, to show the background to Christmas.
We started with Creation. When God makes something, anything,
it is GOOD. Has to be if He makes it! But when we look around
at our world or at individuals we see a lot that is not good.
So we looked at the story of Adam and Eve and thought about
how people mess up. Then on from individuals to whole societies
living with false values; this took us to the story of Noah
and the flood. From there we thought about how we could get
back to the Good that God planned. We'd need help! We thought
about what a perfect world might be like and saw what Isaiah
had to say about that. Our list wasn't so very different from
his. Who could help? We learned the word Messiah and learned
about David, the great Shepherd King. Would the Messiah be
like that? Well, not quite, David had a man's faults, too,
but we found out who Jesse was and what David had to do with
Bethlehem so when we come to sing our Christmas carols they'll
make more sense now! Then we heard about the message preached
by John the Baptist. Now we're getting really close to the
birth of the Messiah…
